The Obituary," the latest creation from playwright Benjamin D. Smith, delves into the poignant tale of a father and son grappling with issues of identity, love, and acceptance in a contemporary world, ultimately leading them to a fateful crossroads.
In a narrative where one lifetime proves insufficient, a son is granted a second chance to communicate the unspoken to the departed, unravelling fifty years of enigmatic family history in the process.
Benjamin Smith, an up-and-coming playwright and student enrolled in Harvard's esteemed Dramatic Studies Program, weaves an enthralling theatrical narrative that peels back the layers of a family's hidden triumphs and tribulations.
Meet The Playwright
Benjamin D. Smith, the Executive Director/CEO of D.R.E.A.M. Studios Inc., is an actor, director, and instructional artist who earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Economics with a minor in Theatre from Florida A&M University. In addition to grant writing and event planning/design, he operates as a freelance consultant in Texas, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. He is the current Treasurer and former president of the Springfield Cultural Council.
As an Executive Member of the Think Tank committee at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, NJ, Benjamin is also a Teaching Artist in their P.E.N. Program (Prolific Engaged Narrators), which implements the Artistic Way of Knowing Theory in New Jersey Public Schools located in Jersey City, Somerset and New Brunswick. He is also the chairman of the Take Back The Day movement, which employs the visual and performing arts to transform the September 11th tragedy into a triumph.
Mr. Smith is a Master of Arts in Dramatic Studies candidate at Harvard University. . He is intrigued by the prospect of earning a doctorate in the field of art therapy as he continue writing plays and producing.
Mr. Smith is a devoted and active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., which he joined via the Hartford (CT) Alumni Chapter in the spring of 1997. Ever since crossing, he has served as the Polemarch (President) of the Springfield Alumni chapter and as the Resurrector. At the present time, he occupies the roles of Chairman of Fundraising and Keeper of Records.
